Innovative Approaches to Crime Prevention in Hospitality Zones

Tuesday

Listen to Archive

The City of Gainesville, Florida is utilizing bold and edgy marketing as part of a comprehensive, nontraditional program to prevent crime in its hospitality zones. Primarily targeted at college age individuals, a typically difficult demographic to impact behaviorally, ‘eye-catching’ techniques include talking urinals as well as messages on ID wristbands and billboards.

This approach is one of many outcomes generated by a collaborative partnership among the police department, local universities’ student governments, alcohol and substance abuse coalitions, hospitality stakeholders and community organizations, in an effort to enhance district safety through reduction of DUIs, underage drinking and intoxication.

In addition to the presenters, other Gainesville participants will include University of Florida Student Government representatives and Assistant Professor Dr. Virginia Dodd from the University of Florida College of Health and Human Performance, Department of Health Education and Behavior. In June 2006 Dr. Dodd received funding from the Department of Education Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools to address high risk drinking among college students.
