In 1989 New Zealand reformed its alcohol regulations and instituted the Host Responsibility program as a condition of licensing. Almost two decades later there have been many changes in the nightlife and culture of New Zealand’s café society, requiring on-going interaction and development of strategies by licensed beverage businesses to maintain orderly premises and be responsive to public safety needs in the community.

This presentation will give insights into the journey New Zealand's capital city of Wellington has traveled to address a wide range of community safety issues, with a particular focus on the reduction of alcohol-related harm in the entertainment precinct. Learn how the city's Safety Strategy initiatives are facilitating better management of the Central Business District's 336 licensed premises.
